Is Brady the Best of All Time?

Tom Brady celebrates with the Lombardi Trophy after Super Bowl LI. Brady and the Patriots completed the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.

Super Bowl LI may be remembered as one of the greatest Super Bowls ever because of the New England Patriots’ amazing comeback. Although the Patriots were favored by three points, the Atlanta Falcons’ speed and efficiency propelled them to a 28-3 lead with approximately 8 minutes left in the third quarter.

At that point, many people probably shut off their TVs, certain that the game was over. However, people should know by now that they can never count out New England’s quarterback – future Hall of Famer Tom Brady. With the help of his defense, receivers, and backs, Brady led the Patriots all the way back, throwing two touchdowns and converting a pair of two-point conversions to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame, the Patriots received the ball first and Brady marched the team down the field, tossing a pitch to running back James White (who himself had a monster game, making a Super Bowl record 14 receptions and scoring three touchdowns and a two-point conversion), who punched it in from two yards out. Final score: New England 34, Atlanta 28.

Brady helped the Patriots score 25 unanswered points, 19 of them in the fourth quarter, to take the game to overtime, the first ever overtime game in the Super Bowl. It was Brady’s fifth title in seven tries and he was awarded his fourth Super Bowl MVP award – no quarterback has ever won as many Super Bowls or as many Super Bowl MVP trophies. It was an epic comeback for the Patriots and their fans, a crushing defeat for the Falcons and their faithful.

However, does this cement Brady’s legacy as the greatest quarterback of all time? The Neersyde asked some members of the TBS community what they think.

“He is the greatest QB ever because he won five Super Bowls, and with that performance he told all the haters he was the greatest,” said New England native and current seventh grader Joey Palomba. Another New England native, middle school math teacher Mr. Edward Chaplin, agreed. “[Brady] is the greatest because I think he throws it to not the most gifted receivers ever, but good receivers, and [he] throws the balls perfectly.”

But what about fans of other teams? “He is the greatest QB ever because he has five Super Bowl titles and four Super Bowl MVPs to go with it,” said self-professed Miami Dolphins fanatic and current seventh grader Zach Loceff.

However, Brady has not won over everyone at Benjamin. “He isn’t the greatest because he deflates balls so he can win.” said seventh grader Liam Gaeta, referring to the “Deflategate” scandal that forced Brady to miss the first four games of the season. Brady was allegedly accused of “having general knowledge” of footballs being deflated that were used in the 2015 AFC Championship Game. However, Brady’s suspension was not because he was proven to be guilty, but rather for his lack of cooperation with the NFL’s independent investigation and League Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“Brady is not the greatest because he is a cheater,” echoed eighth grader Cole Jernstedt. According to www.profootballtalk.com, a site owned by NBCUniversal, the Patriots were recently voted the most hated team among fans, earning 21 percent of the vote. The second most hated team was the Cowboys with 19 percent of the vote.

According to some Patriot fans, though, they feel others hate Brady and the Patriots simply because they are jealous of their success, and green with envy that their own team is not as dominant. “I am from New England, so I grew up hating the Yankees because we lost so many times to them,” said Chaplin. “I just think it’s human nature – you don’t want the same team to win every time.”

“The Pats are the most hated team because of the fact that they are the greatest dynasty ever and because they keep winning,” said Palomba. “If they were not good, nobody would hate them.”

For non-Patriot fans, the hatred stems from the fact that they feel the Patriots break the rules to gain an advantage. “I think they are the most hated team in the NFL because they are cheaters and because they are known to cheat, like with Spygate and Deflategate,” said Loceff. Spygate was the incident in 2007 where the New York Jets complained to the NFL that the Patriots had taped their defensive signals from an unauthorized location during a game early that season. Taping opposing coaches is not illegal in the NFL, as long as teams do it from authorized locations within the stadium. The Patriots did not, and were thus fined $250,000 and lost their first draft pick in the 2008 draft. In addition, their head coach, Bill Belichick, was fined $500,000.

Regardless of how fans feel one way or another, the truth is that the Patriots have won 5 Super Bowls in the past 15 years. The common denominators that tie all of those championships together are few: New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Head Coach Bill Belichick, and, of course, quarterback Tom Brady.
