An End to the Drought
The sixth-grade football team gets off the schneid and wins its first game in more than two years!
In their first game of the season, Benjamin’s sixth-grade football team did something they hadn’t done in two years.
Score!
The Bucs scored not one, but two touchdowns in a very competitive game against a talented Gulliver Prep squad. After not scoring (and thus, not winning) for two consecutive years, the team looks headed in the right direction with its new crop of sixth graders. Despite losing 20-14 to Gulliver, there are plenty of positives to take away from the first game of the season. “They were being very competitive…[and] it’s also evident that the team possesses some grit and won’t back down when faced with adversity,” said Head Coach Mr. Anthony DiGiovanni.
However, the story gets even better. The team won its very next game – its first road contest of the year, 16-14 against Westminster Academy. It was the sixth-grade team’s first win in more than two years!
“Already the sixth graders have proven themselves as strong and willing to fight hard,” said Mr. Marshall Mullinix, one of the team’s assistant coaches.
Coach DiGiovanni thinks the potential is there for the Bucs to have a successful campaign this year, and he likes the team’s character.
“From seeing this team play just twice, they have proven that they will not back down to anyone, and they for sure will go far this season.”
It’s one milestone after another for the sixth graders this year. They scored two touchdowns in the season opener, and then recorded a win in just their second game. It leaves one to wonder what will happen during this Thursday’s tilt at American Heritage. Whatever happens, the team is poised to build upon its success thus far.
